What is a Museum?

Our readings for this week, as well as our discussion in class, hit upon one of my museum pet peeves – visitors wandering museum galleries with their phones permanently in front of their faces, snapping pictures of every single work of art instead of simply looking at it, reading wall labels, or otherwise engaging with the art beyond an iPhone snap to (possibly) look at later. Why simply enjoy being in the presence of a classic painting like “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” or “Starry Night,” or take the opportunity to examine the artwork up close, when you can focus on putting a photo of it on social media? It always strikes me as a waste of a museum visit.
